Annoying Ways People Use Sources

In the essay, Annoying Ways People Use Sources, Kyle D, Stedman, tells us about six annoying ways people use quotations in essays, and grammar errors the writer makes using quotes. Using metaphorical situations Stedman shows his reader the wrong way people use their resources.

1. Armadillo Roadkill-> Putting a quote in without introducing it first.
You can avoid this by giving the reader a bridge or in other words a way to know where the quote came from.

2. Dating Spider-Man-> Starting or ending a paragraph with a quotation.
To fix this make sure your guiding your reader to the quote and after your telling them a way to interpret the quote.

3. Uncle Barry and His Encyclopedia of Useless Information-> Using too many quotes without explaining them.
To fix this you can go back to each quotation and say why it's there.

4. Am I in the Right Movie?-> Putting a quote in a sentence without using proper grammar.
To fix this read your easy out loud and if it's hard to read a quotation you should adjust it.

5. I Can't Find the Stupid Link-> The first letter of the parenthetical doesn't match with the first letter of the works cited at the end.
To fix this make sure the first word in the works cited entry matches the word you used in the in-text citation.

6. I Swear I Did Some Research!-> Blends words and phrases from sources with ones that they came up with themselves.
To fix this write sentences before the citation with things that tell the reader what information came from where.

Body In Trouble ~Nancy Mairs

In Body In Trouble it explains how being physically or mentally disabled makes other people look at you as helpless, and that you need to be fixed. Being disabled is not the only reason that it is hard for some people, for some it's the color of their skin, wealth, gender, or who they like. These people have to learn how to adapt to the world where being unique in a non normal way is not always accepted as good, and they are judged all the time on what they look like or do. Some of these people who are physically or mentally disabled feel confined, because not many people want to accept that there are people who have it different. Nancy explains how being in a wheelchair makes her invisible,"...not one of them seemed to think that any life was going on below the level of his or her own gaze." This shows how some people can be so ignorant of others needs, and won't look twice to help them. So the only way for Nancy and others like her to live in a world like this is to hope people change, and to find their own livable world that will accept them.

How to Tame a Wild Tongue

The author spoke a lot of the same language and she grew up knowing many different variations of Spanish. People in different parts of Mexico and the U.S. spoke a different kind of Spanish. When the author was young she got in trouble for speaking in another language other than English. She spoke Spanish to his family, people at school. media and at work but each was a certain variation of Spanish. Some of the kids were told that their language was wrong, and when they came close to someone who spoke the same language it was hard to know if it was alright to speak. They were afraid to talk to a different type of Hispanic because they were afraid of being told that the way they speak is not the way to speak. The author is only hurt when her language in made fun of, and until she can be proud of his language she cannot be proud of himself. Although the author does  have other ways of keeping in touch with his homeland, and it's through the culture it's smells the foods remind her of his identity. The real struggle is the borders between the identities, and one day they will no longer exist then the true integration will take place.

If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is? ~JAMES BALDWIN

In this essay James Baldwin is saying that Black people are being judged based on the language that they speak, and that people assume that Black speak all the same language. Everyone has their own language that they speak so just because they live in a certain area doesn't mean that they have to be able to speak the common language. The language certain people speak has a price to accept and achieve an identity that is given to it, and some countries have the determination to keep their language alive so that it isn't destroyed. The language that you speak can identify a lot about you if it isn't the common language, and in some cases can be a risk to speak in front of people who don't speak it. However, sometimes the language that you speak can be the same as the common, and the way that you speak it (accent) can tell people a lot about your identity. Also some words used by the people in one country can mean something totally different in another country, and that can be adopted to become a phenomenon that soon loses it's in style status. Now if this is hard to understand that many people have their own dialect that they speak then it is going to be hard for black people.

Prison Studies by Malcolm X

Reading helps you gain a lot of knowledge because you are motivated to know more to fill your curiosity. The more Malcolm read from the dictionary his understanding of books broadened because he had an idea of what he was reading. He said that every time he read a book he could imagine a new world, and made him forget being imprisoned it let him free. The only motivation he had was from Bimbi his friend which is how he became so interested in reading, and now he is a famous person known by not a whole lot but a lot of people.
