In this essay James Baldwin is saying that Black people are being judged based on the language that they speak, and that people assume that Black speak all the same language. Everyone has their own language that they speak so just because they live in a certain area doesn't mean that they have to be able to speak the common language. The language certain people speak has a price to accept and achieve an identity that is given to it, and some countries have the determination to keep their language alive so that it isn't destroyed. The language that you speak can identify a lot about you if it isn't the common language, and in some cases can be a risk to speak in front of people who don't speak it. However, sometimes the language that you speak can be the same as the common, and the way that you speak it (accent) can tell people a lot about your identity. Also some words used by the people in one country can mean something totally different in another country, and that can be adopted to become a phenomenon that soon loses it's in style status. Now if this is hard to understand that many people have their own dialect that they speak then it is going to be hard for black people.
